The phase out of the Google Adwords Keyword Tool is in full effect.

Say hello to the new Adwords Keyword Planner.  If you recently setup an Adwords account, you will notice this change right away.  It seems that the old way of using this tool for some organic keyword research has now become a little bit more complex.  Select accounts have already had the keyword planner functions added to them and many have become familiar with how it works.

How Google Keyword Planner Works:

The keyword planner combines the old Google Keyword Tool and the Adwords Traffic Estimator.  There’s a lot of new fun tools to use and the process is a bit more structured to have the user take action.  Taking potential advertisers directly to the step to step process of creating an ad campaign one baby step at a time.

Instead of simply putting in a keyword example or two and selecting a broad or exact search, you are given three options with this new Keyword Planner.  It asked:  “What would you like to do?

Option 1:  Search for Keyword and Ad Group Ideas.

Option 2:  Enter or Upload Keyword Ideas to See How they Perform.

Option 3: Multiply Keyword Lists.

Most options will take you straight to an estimates page, showing you the bid range, clicks per day, daily costs amount and other data.  Want to leave the page?  You can, but when you return your plan will be ready for you.

You can resume this keyword research plan or start over with some new research.  Now your keyword research is directly tied to a PPC campaign.  Is it time to find a new tool for organic keyword research?  Maybe.
